THE Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust has been granted funding for a second consultant nurse by Health Secretary Alan Milburn.

The nursing posts have been introduced to provide experienced nurses with positions of responsibility in patient care, after many experienced nurses were tempted into administrative jobs offering promotion and better pay.

The trust received funding for a nurse consultant specialising in cancer earlier this year, and received funding for the second after submitting a bid for a critical care specialist to the National Health Service's regional office.

The trust's director of nursing, Mona Walker, said: 'We have recently been building up our critical care services, with the opening of the high dependency unit alongside our intensive care unit.

'We believe it is vitally important to continue to retain and attract highly skilled staff for these units.

'This appointment can only strengthen our nursing team providing these key services to the local community.'

The position was one of 91 consultant posts approved in the UK by Mr Milburn, and one of six in the Eastern Region.

Trust spokesman Mark Purcell said the trust hopes to appoint nurses to both positions soon.
