PLANS to save a Frogmore pub from closure were given the go-ahead this week, after planners approved an expansion scheme.
The Red Cow pub in Radlett Road has seen three landlords give up and leave since 1992 due to crippling financial difficulties.
In a report to St Albans District Council's plans south sub-committee, meeting on Monday, the present landlord said he was also beginning to feel the strain and that the proposed extension to provide a new dining area and toilets was needed to safeguard the pub's future.
The report said: 'When we purchased the property in August 1999 it was in total disrepair and the site was an eyesore. We have improved the whole site, such that local residents have commented on the improvements.'
The plans for alterations to the Grade II listed building have been scaled down from previous schemes refused by the council in January. An officers' report said plans were in keeping with the character of the Green Belt.
and would not cause significant problems for neighbouring residents.
Councillor Gordon Myland told the meeting: 'I hate to see pubs close. I have an aversion to it.
'I have known several of the landlords of this particular pub. They have all tried desperately to make a living.
'I don't think this application will do any harm to the building itself, and I fully support it.'
