SHOPPERS looking for bargains, street entertainment and the chance meet a friendly lion should get along to St Albans Market as it marks Great British Market Week tomorrow (Saturday).

Victor the Lion, the market week mascot, will be handing out sweets and balloons to children, as jugglers, buskers and other circus artists contribute to the carnival atmosphere by performing between bunting-decorated stalls.

There is also a free prize draw with a top prize of £100.

The five-year national promotion, coming to St Albans for the first time, aims to encourage shoppers to support their local markets.

Events will also run on August 9 and 12.

Mr Malcolm Wallis, St Albans Street Traders' secretary, said: 'We want everyone to come along and join in three great days of fun and great shopping.'

'Bring family, bring friends - and maybe win up to £100.

'This is our first effort in arranging such a major event and we want it to be a great success.

'We also want it to be known that our popular market offers quality of service and a friendly service second to none.'
