SARACENS announced new signing Abdelatif Benazzi would be taking over as captain for the 2001/2002 season on Tuesday, August 21.
French International Benazzi, who signed a two year deal in May, has captained France on many occasions as well as his former club side Agen, and takes over from last season's captain Kyran Bracken.
After much deliberation over the summer, Bracken has decided to relinquish the duty to concentrate on his own game.
"I just felt that my form suffered with the added responsibility last season," explained Bracken. "I think it will be of more benefit to the club if I am playing at my best and with a man like Abdel taking over we are in a good position.
"I enjoyed my season as captain and it has helped me in certain areas of my game, but I now just want to concentrate on playing well for the club and push for the England No. 9 jersey this season. I will of course be 110% behind Abdel both on and off the pitch."
Saracens chief executive, Francois Pienaar, said: "We have been very impressed with the way that Abdel has been leading the team during our pre-season matches.
"He has gained the respect of the squad for the way he pushes himself in both training and match situations, and leads by example."
