The council dump in Summers Lane, North Finchley, has been converted into a recycling centre.

In addition to the introduction of a doorstep recycling service, Barnet Council has refurbished the so-called 'civic amenity site' in a bid to meet the Government's strict recycling targets.

The council hopes that the centre will be used primarily for recyclable materials, but waste that cannot be recycled will be collected there as well, before being sent to landfill sites.

The revamped site will be run by ECT, a non-profit organisation which is also handling the doorstep service. It has promised to fund extra street cleaning for the immediate area, community liaison meetings, and stop large vehicles entering or leaving the site during the busy school-run hours.

Councillor Geof Cooke, cabinet member for the environment, said: "This new facility will help the council in its bid to create a cleaner, more attractive borough and provide a better quality of life for all residents."

The centre will be open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 4pm on Sundays and most bank holidays.

The following items can be recycled at the centre: glass, newspapers, magazines, mixed papers, yellow pages, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles, textiles, shoes, paint, tyres, oil, oil filters, batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas bottles, furniture, white goods (fridges, ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.), green waste, electronic items, wood and scrap metal.
