ST ALBANS returned to winning ways at the well-drilled but predictable Grasshoopers RFC from West London by 33-16 despite trailing by five points at half-time.

Saints can largely thank their pack who turned in a magnificent performance in the loose to clinch victory from what was potentially a very difficult fixture.

The front row of Tripick, Hume, Batchelor and replacement prop Giddings all turned in fine performances especially in this impressive win.

Things looked promising for the boys from Boggymead but over confidence in the ranks led to a handling error which the Londoners gleefully hoofed the length of the pitch, gathered and scored.

Some strong words under the posts saw St Albans revitalised and Stevenson marched his team-mates down the pitch with a combination of kicks and midfield thrusts.

Saints got their deserved score when a midfield scrum gave the visitors the opportunity to work a simple blindside move which winger McMullian finished off in the corner.

However, Grasshoopers fought back, and, relying on the wind to give them field position, and the referee's whistle, increased their score by a further two penalties as the two teams turned round with the score at 16-8 in favour of the home side.

A different St Albans side emerged for the second half with the decision to play positive rugby bringing quick dividends.
