A Sefer Torah scroll has been donated to the Hertsmere Jewish Primary School in Radlett to help pupils learn about their religion and identity.
The Sefer Torah, a precious hand-written scroll documenting the Old Testament, was given to the school by members of the Holland Park Synagogue's congregation.
Possesion of the Torah is an important symbol for the school, as its contents provide a framework for Jewish life.
Headteacher Michele Bazak said pupils had been in awe of the scroll when it was brought in, and that its donation marked one of the most important developments in the school's history.
"We have quite rigorous Jewish studies on our curriculum, to help the children learn about their identity.
"They appreciated that this was a very special gift, and when the scroll was brought in, the atmosphere was spiritual.
"It was a very moving occasion."
A special cupboard, called an ark, was donated by a person from Borehamwood, and the school's religious adviser, Rabbi Alan Plancey from Borehamwood Synagogue, made a speech to mark the occasion.
