Shoppers across Hertsmere will be treated to free live comedy performances this week, courtesy of the borough council.

The comedy duo Gloria and Albert will perform at shopping areas around the borough, to put across the message that people need to recycle more household items.

Hertsmere Borough Council has organised the shows, which are being partially funded by various charities and businesses linked to the waste disposal industry.

Recycling officer Faye Clamp said the comedians had worked in other areas of Hertfordshire, and had proven to be effective in explaining why recyling is important.

"They are very good at chatting to people about recycling issues, such as whether they use the facilities and what obstacles prevent them from recycling."

She said the live shows were part of a larger project to encourage recyling in Hertsmere.

The borough has been told to more than double the amount of waste it recycles by 2004.

Council-organised shows about recycling will be performed at schools in November, and another campaign will be launched at Christmas, to let people know where they can recycle items such as Christmas trees.

All of the shows will be held from 10am until 4pm.

The first was due to be held today at the Tesco store in Borehamwood's Shenley Road.

Another show will be staged on Saturday, October 20, opposite Superdrug in Borehamwood's Shenley Road, and the last will be performed at the Budgens store in Radlett's Watling Street on October 26.
