STORYTELLING, reading competitions and visits from illustrators and authors enthralled pupils at St Hilda's School in High Street, Bushey, during national book week.
The week, which aims to encourage children to read and stir their interest in books, included visits from author Jean Ure, storyteller John Harris and authors and illustrators Ronda and David Armitage.
Pupils from Form 3 and Form 6 were taken to a production of The Silver Sword at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon, upper school pupils took part in a reading aloud competition, and a book hat parade was organised for children in the lower school where children had to make hats based on the theme or character from their favourite book.
English co-ordinator Mrs Janet Rosewall organised the event and said "All the visitors were great and we have got some really good feedback from them.
"We usually do something for Book Week but we had a lot going on this time including visits from famous authors.
"The hats in the hat parade were unbelievable the parents had gone to so much effort and there were creations such as Mr McGregors' garden, Rapunzel and more simple things too like Noddy.
"It's a good week to give reading a high profile. Our girls like reading and, while they love Harry Potter, they have a good awareness of other books and read a very wide range of material. They are quite sophisticated in their reading.
"Now we will be thinking about our Christmas book fair and putting on an activity for world book day in March 2002."
