The maternity unit at the Royal Free Hospital is set for a new look after the hospital was given more than £1million.

Barnet Hospital missed out on a share of the £100million Department of Health money which went to 208 maternity units across England. Instead £600,000 went to its sister hospital Chase Farm. The £1,230,000 for the Royal Free in Hampstead will be used to create a homely atmosphere across the unit with a reception area and a water pool in the labour ward.

The hospital also hopes to provide a welcoming and supportive environment in the postnatal ward along with en-suite facilities. A reception area and consultation facilities will also be built in the antenatal clinic.

Demetris Economides, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Royal Free, said: "We are delighted to have this opportunity to create a thoroughly modern maternity unit which will have a greater range of facilities."
