HOW times have changed since the St Albans Judo Club was formed little more than 50 years ago.

Its current status as one of the top clubs in the country is a far cry from the time when a black belt in the building created such a stir that that the club charged double for mat time.

Progress has been such that the club now counts among its members three national champions, while Sato Sensei, the national judo coach of Spain and a sixth Dan graded in Japan, has for years included on his calendar a visit to the Hertfordshire club to host a two-day course on the techniques of judo.

His most recent visit, last weekend, attracted enthusiasts from Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland and the quality of his instruction only benefits the likes of Adam Breed, St Albans' national junior champion.
