The Tommy Sampson era begins this weekend for Wood in one of the Ryman League's less intimidating enclosures, as they face lowly Croydon, placed 17th in the table.
Gloriously nicknamed the Trams, Wood will be hoping to shunt the Surrey team aside, although they will have to go some to repeat the scoreline the last time the clubs met in South Norwood.
Back on November 6 1993, goals from Gary Campbell, Barry Fox, Richard Davies, and an own goal, condemned a doomed Croydon side to a 5-1 home defeat, but the March return at Meadow Park was even worse, as Wood ran riot in a 10-0 win.
By then Croydon had lost the majority of their first team squad, and were playing out their division one campaign staffed by park players.
The long climb back began in 1996,when they were second division runners-up to Canvey Island, and four years later Croydon retained the premier division berth they had lost back in 1989 as they won the division one title.
Croydon have recently enlisted the services of former Crystal Palace trainee striker Dave Stevens, and they will be hoping that he can help them erase last Saturday's disappointment, when an 85th minute goal saw the Trams' FA Cup hopes derailed at home by Havant & Waterlooville.
Marshalled in midfield by former Spurs and Dulwich man, Peter Garland, Croydon will not provide Sampson with the easiest of starts, as one of their three home league wins so far this term was against fancied Canvey Island, but three points should certainly not prove beyond his new charges.
