CONMEN have been trying to trick their way into people's houses in Watford by pretending to be firefighters.

They have been wearing peaked caps and saying they want to check people's smoke detectors.

They have not managed enter anybody's property but police and the fire service are warning people to be on their guard.

The peaked caps should be a giveaway because firefighters in Watford no longer wear that kind of headwear.

Sub officer Eric Muncer, from Watford Fire Station, said: "In normal circumstances, there will be more than one person and they will normally be accompanied by a fire engine. People should ask for their ID card. If they have any problems, telephone the fire brigade.

"If there is anybody in the area with a peaked cap, saying they are from the fire brigade, it is probably not true."

A spokesman for the police said: "If people are in any doubt whatsoever about people calling at their homes, they should contact the police immediately.

"Any genuine caller will always be able to prove who they are, especially if they are from the emergency services."
