WORLD matchplay champion Ian Woosnam would have been impressed by the golf at the West Herts Club Championship between James York and Ian Close.

York (scratch) produced a stunning round, including seven birdies and an eagle, to win 5 and 3, leaving his beaten opponent (3) to concede graciously: "It was a privilege to be part of it, and witness such wonderful play."

The over 60's championship produced two very determined winners, both of whom were two down with three to play, and won on the 19th green.

John Phillipson (10) won the Chalmers Salver from Les Willis (17), and in the over 65's Veterans Cup John Rivers (12) was pipped by Harry Phelps (17).

In the Victory Plate, David Latimer (3) proved too steady for Ben Knowles-Johnson (16), winning 6&4.

The Beckwith Bowl was retained for the second year by Dominic Ronan (3), who produced unbeatable golf throughout the year to succeed against 173 other contestants. Mick Henderson (14) was runner-up, and Ronan is now unbeaten in 14 rounds.

The mixed final produced another tight finish when lady captain Mary Cooper and partner, Liam Moan, won on the 20th green against Tom and Yvonne Rowe. The Rowes proved a very determined pair, each sinking long putts on the 17th and 18th greens to push the match into extra time.
