Harefield Utd 2 Wingate & Finchley 1
FA Vase 1st round replay
Wingate and Finchley went out of the FA Vase on Tuesday after succumbing to Barry Dunn's 85th-minute winner.
The killer blow came Dunn was allowed to coast in at the near post to meet a cross from the right with a flick header.
As time was running out, Wingate almost forced extra time. Richard Baum delivered a cross and Danny Fitzpatrick threw himself at the ball only to see keeper Lee Langley produce a fine save.
But in the end, it was a case of Wingate not taking the chances that came their way and paying the price.
Harefield went ahead in the 29th minute. Wingate keeper James Goodman dived full length to turn a shot from Gary Collinson for a corner, and when Wingate failed to clear, Daryl Craft drilled a low shot into the net.
Five minutes before the interval, Wingate drew level. Manager Tommy Cunningham made a double substitution that soon paid off. Robert Donn was sent on and his long cross was expertly controlled by John Butterfield, who turned his opponent and scored with his left foot.
Wingate had plenty of chances in the second half. But Danny Fitzpatrick twice fired wide, Anthony Fenton crashed a header against the bar, and Paul Wood was thwarted by another fine save from Langley before Dunn won the tie five minutes from the end.
WINGATE & FINCHLEY: Goodman, Neilsen, Piler, Pearl (Morris 34), Ellis, Fenton, Butterfield, Levack (Donn 34), Wood, Fitzpatrick, Baum. Subs not used: Thompson, Forwell.
