An 18th-century murder victim buried in Elstree will be the subject of a contest at the village's pub The Plough on Saturday.
The contest, a cross between a treasure hunt and pub quiz, will be centred around the mystery of murder victim Martha Ray, who is buried in Elstree churchyard.
The contest, called The Mystery of Martha Ray: A Tale of Murder, Love and Madness, has been created for the High Street pub, by writer Andrew Chapman, to mark Halloween.
Mr Chapman said punters will have to search for hidden clues, and the first team to solve the mystery will win a magnum of champagne. "The nice thing is that it is all based on a slice of local history, and it is incredible how many famous figures of the day were connected, in some way, with this young singer and actress who was murdered," he added. Entry to the contest, which starts at 8pm, will cost £1.
