The RSPCA is calling on Barnet residents to safeguard their pets during the forthcoming Guy Fawkes celebrations.

The charity annually deals with hundreds of fireworks-related emergency calls involving acts of cruelty, terrified pets and accidents on or around November 5.

Chris Laurence, the RSPCA's chief veterinary officer, said: "Each year we're horrified at the number of animals brought to us for emergency care as a result of fireworks injuries.

"Unfortunately some injuries we treat are as a result of deliberate cruelty."

The animal charity has issued the following advice:

Never let off fireworks near animals and ensure all pets are kept indoors after dark

Take rabbits and other outdoor pets into a garage or outbuilding

Close curtains and leave a TV or radio on to camouflage noise

Build bonfires as late as possible and gently disturb the fire's foundations at least two hours before lighting to ensure there are no animals inside

Make sure pets are properly identified by a collar and tag or a microchip in case they run off.

To report cruelty or injured animals call the RSPCA on 08705 555 999.
