PROPOSALS for two licensed taxi ranks in Bushey have been scrapped after local councillors objected to the plans.

The ranks, in High Road and Rudolph Road, were part of a scheme to create eight new taxi ranks throughout Hertsmere, which currently has just one.

However, feedback from businesses and residents revealed the proposed taxi ranks were unpopular as they would lead to the loss of two short-term parking bays.

This week, the plans were withdrawn and, at a meeting on Wednesday, October 31, called by Councillor Spencer Pitfield, councillors and officers met to discuss alternatives.

Councillor Pitfield attributed the failure of the scheme in Bushey to a breakdown in communication between officers and councillors.

Councillor Michael Colne said: "We are going to try and look at alternatives that would allow taxis to park in Bushey that may or may not be possible.

"I personally don't think there's any need for taxi ranks in Bushey."

While the failure of the scheme may have brought relief to local shopkeepers and their customers, not all parties are pleased by the news.

Cab driver Mr Alan Morsen is one of 24 cabbies in the borough working on a three-space rank outside Elstree and Borehamwood Station.

He argued that, as many mini cab firms do not have vehicles with wheelchair access, cab drivers were not the only victims of the scuppered plans.

He blamed councillors' personal motives for the failure of the scheme and fears political pressures will force taxi ranks to the back streets.

He said: "There are two carparks at the end of the High Street and they are never ever full. I think it's a personal thing."

The other six taxi ranks proposed in the borough are expected to be up and running by the New Year.
