It is not the humps that are lethal, it is the drivers who drive over them insisting that they have the right to ignore the speed or drink drive limit (Humps are lethal', Times Letters, November 1).
One should not ask how many fatalities we have had in the past, but how many fatalities we would have had without the bumps. The measures to control speeding drivers were put in by the council at the request of residents who fought for 20 years to have something done to control the danger on Camlet Way and Beech Hill. Finally the council agreed that accidents on these roads were among the highest in the borough and agreed to spend up to £50,000 all they could afford.
What they have done is obviously not perfect, but it does control 95 per cent of speeding cars in these roads and is an absolute godsend for the residents. What the humps cannot do is control those car or lorry drivers stupid, arrogant or manic enough to insist on driving over the humps at ridiculous speeds, ignoring any speed limits, or those drivers who insist on driving whilst over the drink drive limit.
