There may not be much use for it in the middle of winter but residents of a tranquil New Barnet street were shocked to discover the theft of their valuable sundial.

The 34 residents of Leecroft Road, Chipping Barnet, awoke on Saturday morning to find the sundial missing, with its stone plinth still in place.

It was stolen between 6pm on Friday night and 9am the next morning.

The antique centrepiece' of the residential square was positioned in the cottages' gardens in 1914.

Robin Marson, clerk to the trustees of the Thomas Watson Cottage Homes, said: "It was fixed to a very large slab of stone and it would have taken more than two people to move it. It is a beautiful piece and the residents are very shocked, as it was the centrepiece of the gardens."

The 12-inch copper sundial, thought to be worth hundreds of pounds, was screwed into a 2ft thick stone plinth and Mr Marson believes it may have been stolen for a private collector.
