ROADWORKS in Abbots Langley will start on Monday, June 10, and are expected to take nine weeks.

Traffic calming measures will be put in place along South Way, Hunton Bridge Hill and Bridge Road, in preparation for the proposed development at Leavesden Aerodrome.

A public consultation took place in July 2001, following residents' concerns about speeding in the area.

Measures include speed cushions along South Way and Hunton Bridge Hill, speed humps along the service road next to the playing field in South Way, and a mini roundabout at the junction of Bridge Road and Old Mill Road.

The speed limit in South Way will be lowered from 60mph to 40mph.

A pedestrian crossing will be built near the playing field in South Way and the Highways Partnership, carrying out the work, is planning to upgrade a number of bus stops, signs, lining and street lighting in the area.

The original plans, discussed during the consultation last year, included plans to introduce priority chicanes in South Way.

These have been replaced by speed cushions following a safety audit.

At a meeting of Abbots Langley Local Area Forum last month, Three Rivers District Councillors Stephen Giles-Medhurst and Chris Whately-Smith expressed concern changes had been made to the scheme without further consultation.

Councillor Giles-Medhurst said: "If there's to be a democratic process through the transport forum then it's got to be seen to be adhered to and there should be a report-back process.

"Members of the public have approved it and then they find it's different to the plans."

However, project manager Steve Johnson said amendments to the scheme were minor and those attending the forum had been informed.

The plans had been advertised in the press and were on display in the library and at the parish council offices.
