Music, dance and other activities for the over-fifties in Hertsmere were showcased at an event at Elstree's Allum Lane Community Centre recently.

Around 80 people using Hertsmere Borough Council's Fifty-Plus services took part in the event, organised as part of the borough's Jubilee celebrations, and more than 200 people watched the show.

There was a stage show, and an exhibition of the various services provided by the Fifty-Plus Team, with stalls about activities ranging from line dancing to arts and crafts.

Lorraine Walsh, the council's Fifty-Plus officer, said the day had been a great success: "It was absolutely wonderful, a really lovely day. We had displays of what people do in their activity groups today, and what they would have done 50 years ago."

Mayor of Hertsmere Stuart Nagler attended with his wife Ros, and said: "We enjoyed it greatly. All the participants enjoyed themselves, and that came through in the performances."

A time capsule was also buried outside Allum Lane Community Centre in Elstree to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee and the borough's silver jubilee, in a ceremony led by the Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Stuart Nagler.

Children at schools in the area were invited to come up with ideas for items which could be contained in the capsule.

The contents included a copy of the Borehamwood & Elstree Times, a Union flag, a Harry Potter book, contemporary coins, a map of Hertsmere, and a set of menus from local restaurants.

Hertsmere Borough Council, which organised the event, would like to thank I & J Brown Butchers, of Leeming Road, for packing the items in plastic.New wave: Celeste Knight and the Maxwell Line Dancing Group
