THUGS killed a cat by smashing its head in with a piece of masonry in South Oxey, the RSPCA has revealed.
An investigation has been launched to find the people responsible for the horrific death.
The cat's body was found in a hedgegrow in Muirfield Road and a bloodstained block of stone, believed to be used in the attack, was discovered in a nearby alley.
Investigating RSPCA inspector Nigel Shelton said he was appalled by the killing.
He added: "There is no doubt that this cat's death was both violent and deliberate.
"It is difficult to imagine the distress and pain the animal must have been through at the hands of its killers."
Posters appealing for the cat's owner to come forward have been put up in the area but no-one has claimed the cat, which was short-haired and in good condition.
The incident is thought to have taken place in the early hours of Saturday, June 1, when two white men in their 20's were seen running away from the alley.
Anyone who recognises the cat or has information about the attack can call the RSPCA in confidence on 08705 555999.
