THE police are looking for people to help them with their inquiries to track down officers and civilian staff killed in the line of duty.

Inspector Steve Kourik, chairman of the Hertfordshire Police History Society, is compiling a Hertfordshire Constabulary Roll of Honour to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He said: "We want to commemorate all those who have died in the line of duty, right back to when the constabulary first started in 1841"

"We are publishing a provisional list of police and civilian officers who will be included on the Roll of Honour.

"We would like any members of the public whether they be surviving friends or relatives, or simply someone with good local knowledge to contact us with any information they may have about the officer, and the circumstances surrounding their death."

The force's older records are not very reliable and Inspector Kourik would like people to contact him if they know of anyone who has been left off the list.

He added: "We have already carried out a lot of research, including the local paper archives which proved extremely useful in filling in some of the gaps in our information. We now hope that our local communities can help provide even more information that will give us the full picture."

So far, the only member on the roll from Watford is PC Colin Roddis, who died in a motorcycle crash on September 10, 1973. Anyone with any information can contact Inspector Kourik on 01707 354406 or e-mail him at steve.kourik@herts.police.uk.
