ENTHUSIASTIC pupils from St Albans High School for Girls made soft toys and school uniforms to be sent to orphaned children in Zimbabwe as part of activities the school is running this week.

More than 300 girls are involved in the activities week, which involves helping the young, the old, the environment and the wider community.

A group of 75 pupils are visiting Mandeville JMI School in Harpenden to help children in the classroom and work on improvements for the gardens and playground.

Several students are also doing voluntary conservation work for the Highfields Park Trust and the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The event is run bi-annually and is organised by pupils from Year 10 under teachers' supervision.

The teacher in charge of the week Mrs Miranda Newton said: "We hope that others will gain from the activities our pupils are taking part in and that the students learn from the experience."
