THE winning keyboard player in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition visited St Albans School on Wednesday, June 26, and played a piano donated by the retiring chairman of governors.
Miss Sarah Tandy, 20, has played on television in the Barbican Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and has given a number of recitals in London venues including the Festival Hall and Southwark Cathedral.
She played at a special recital in the library of St Albans School. The piano she played was presented to the school in the Abbey Gateway by Mr Robert Sharpe, who has been the chairman of governors for 12 years.
Director of music at the school David McCord said "The piano is a superb instrument and we thought we should mark its arrival with a special concert.
"It has taken time to get a booking with Sarah Tandy, but it was a great privilege to hear the piano played by one of music's rising stars."
Miss Tandy played a wide range of music, including works by Ravel, Schoenberg and Liszt.
