ST ALBANS CITY FC begin preparations for the second campaign under Steve Cook and Gary Roberts on Tuesday (July 2), when the 20 or so players that will form the nucleus of the City squad will stretch their legs before their first pre-season training session.

"We're in good shape," Cook said, "much better than we were this time last season, definitely.

"We've had a season to have look at the league and what level can be expected from players, and know how to go about getting points.

"We've got the basis of a strong squad of 18, and have no intention of actively seeking new players."

This though, was said with the proviso that the Saints secured the signatures of two of the three players they were due to meet last night (Wednesday).

They included an experienced midfielder "He's been a pro all his life," and two forwards from the Conference League, one of whom has Premier League experience.

Should they join, and Cook believes two are "definites", they will join latest addition Stuart Beevor, who has arrived on a non-contract basis from Hitchin Town.

Beevor was part of the Stevenage Borough squad which won the Conference League in 1995/96 and, at 27, will add bite to the midfield.

"He was Hitchin's best player when they played us last season," Cook said.

The only slight cloud over Clarence Park remains the future of Corey Campbell, who has still not signed what is a recently-revised offer.

"I think he wants to stay, but is a financial decision for him," Cook explained. "We've pushed it to the limit regarding our budget and what we can offer him.

"We want everyone here to be on a similar (wage) level and want to get away from a barter situation with other clubs. He'll let us know by the end of the week."

Campbell, though, after forming such a good central defensive partnership with Derek Brown and then being named club captain when Brown went to Bedford Town, appears to be holding out for improved terms.

He said: "I have spoken to other clubs, but want to stay at St Albans. I'm seeing them on Friday (June 28) and hopefully we can sort it out then."
