VERULAM GOLF CLUB returns to Scratch League action on Saturday, June 29, when they will be looking for their first victory of the season against fierce rivals Welwyn Garden City.
After defeats to South Herts and Moor Park, a win on Saturday would go a long way to securing Verulam's status in the top division.
While they will be without three regulars (John Maguire, Donald Longman and Louis Matamala), captain Alan Johnson hopes local knowledge will be the key.
"Those three would all play if they were available, but home advantage is very important. Welwyn beat us last season, when we were away, and we beat them at home the season before that."
Welwyn, who opened their campaign with a good draw against Sandy Lodge, are intense rivals and Johnson does not deny this will add bite to what was already going to be a crunch tie.
"They've been promoted with us the last two times, but we need to beat them after losing our first two matches," Johnson concluded.
