Barnet have lost the services of midfielder Steve Searle after the 25-year-old declined the club's offer of a new contract.
Searle, who only figured in the first team towards the end of last season after a spell of almost two years on the sidelines with a string of injuries, is hopeful of securing a permanent deal with Cambridge United after being offered a trial with the Third Division side.
Peter Shreeves, who once described Searle as a "very talented player", gave him his comeback in April after sending him to the Lilleshall medical rehabilitation centre in a bid to rid him of his troublesome injuries.
The former Sittingbourne player, whose contract with Barnet expired at the end of June, signed for the Bees in August 1997 on a free transfer despite him attracting the attention of a host of other clubs. He scored four goals in 77 appearances.
