Police have been inundated with complaints from householders who have fallen for a scam in which men claiming to be from reputable driveway resurfacing companies have taken deposits and then disappeared.
All the companies have claimed to be based at the same address in Greenland Road, Barnet.
An elderly couple in Axholme Avenue, Edgware, paid £900 in May to a man who said his name was Edward Ford and claimed to be from the Regency Driveway Company.
He convinced them that their drive needed resurfacing and took them to several nearby houses, which had apparently new driveways and Regency signs on display. The couple have not seen him or his workmen since.
DC Andy Grant of Harrow Police said the conmen, who all have Irish accents, favour elderly victims.
"Where work is done, it is of a very low standard and has to be repaired at extra cost to the victims," he added.
