THE HERTS PHOENIX JUNIORS slipped off the summit of the National Junior League in a meeting at Walthamstow on Sunday, June 30, when a depleted squad was unable to accumulate enough points to prevent Woodford Green reclaiming top spot.

Despite the overall result, those that did compete did so admirably, with a number of athletes setting personal bests.

Dani Powling began the day by breaking the 5m-barrier in the long jump, stretching out to 5.06m to record her best ever distance, before repeating the feat in the triple jump when a distance of 10.88m improved her record by 30cm.

Later, Hayley Wills displayed rare stamina to finish the 200m in 27.8 seconds shortly after winning the 400m in a time of 61.7.

Elsewhere, Caroline Jones set a new personal best in the hammer with a throw of 28.44m, although, predictably the event was won by new British international Nicola Dudman.

Her distance of 52.57m, while falling a long way short of her other recent performances, was still sufficient to set a new National Junior League record.

Despite these performances, the girls finished third overall, while Ben Solomon's throw of 11.66m in the shot could only help the boys to seventh place.
