AUTOMATIVE engineering students worked day and night last week to put the finishing touches on the University of Hertfordshire's entry for the International Formula Student Race Event 2002.

The racing car will be put to the test this week in a competition event in Bruntingthorpe.

Final year students spent months working on the car to ensure it was ready for the annual event where it will undergo rigorous professional tests, just as any racing car would prior to a track race, at one of the country's top tracks.

The unveiling of the car was the highlight of a 50th anniversary celebratory evening held at the university in Hatfield on Wednesday, June 26.

More than 150 guests viewed the innovative projects by engineering students.

Display items included a flight simulator and a Europa aeroplane, which will eventually be used as a demonstrator plane in the United States.

The car was launched by Professor Mike Pittilo, who paid tribute to the staff and students who had worked on the car.

He said: "It's a massive task to design, develop and deliver a prototype vehicle in just nine months.

"But the benefits of this effort is clear when it is integrated into final year education programmes. The competition simulates the pressures of the industry and many of our students have gone on to work for Formula 1 teams."
