A MAN who has been involved in the Scout movement all his life has stepped down as group chairman after 27 years.

Mr Gordon Crouch was a boy when he first became involved in the movement, joining the First Northwood Scout Group.

This week Mr Crouch, who had been chairman of the 29th Bushey and Oxhey Methodist Scout Group for almost three decades, spoke about his memories over the years.

Despite standing down as chairman and deserving a well earned rest, Mr Crouch, who moved from Silverdale Road, Bushey, six years ago to Leverstock Green, has stayed on as a member of the group executive committee charged with fundraising and organising the events programme.

He said the main memories he has of his time at the Scout's hut, in Chalk Hill, Bushey, is the "friendliness and commitment of people involved".

He said: "The thing that sticks out is the friendship we have had from members of the group. That is one of the most important things."

"The thing I am most proud of is that it has been very difficult over the years finding leaders and keeping the group together.

"We have done that and it is very important to the community. I feel proud of the fact we have managed to keep it going when others have stopped."

Mr Crouch, described by fellow group members as "a modest man", did not mention the party held in his honour two weeks ago as one of his fondest memories, instead recalling a celebration for someone else.

He said: "We had a group scout leader who had been involved for 55 years in the group and we managed to bring a lot of people together from all over the country."

Even in retirement Mr Crouch could not help but do what comes naturally and promote the group.

He said: "The scouting movement is perfect for young boys and I recommend any young lads not sure what they want to do to get involved. It is a fantastic organisation."

Those interested in joining as a helper, member, or in any capacity, they can telephone Mr Crouch on 01442 247531.
