HUMAN rights, global economics and the eradication of polio were just some of the tough topics debated by pupils from a local boys school at a recent visit to The Hague.
The pupils from Haberdashers' Aske's School for Boys in Elstree made the visit to attend the The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) 2005.
Representing the former Soviet Union state of Uzbekistan, the boys debated several weighty issues.
Resolutions were put forward by the Haberdashers' delegation, including the issue of integrating transition economies into the global economy, the question of polio eradication and the idea of sport being used as a tool for peace.
The school's special conference delegate managed to get his resolution passed within 20 minutes of debate and with an outstanding majority.
THIMUN is held to encourage youths to take an active interest in world affairs.
It is an affiliated body of the UN and is recognised as an NGO.
More than 3,500 people from all over the world attended the event.
