Reviewed by Darren Rackham THE first thing that hits you about this NHL title is the graphics and sound and how well the action is tied in with everything else going on.
For a start the crowd reaction to what is happening on the ice is fantastic. Knock someone over or fire off a shot and you'll be booed, jeered or applauded.
The controls are good and easy to use and for a game of this type you'll be hard pushed to find another that gives you such freedom of movement in all ways.
Throwing a punch at the opposition is very satisfying and there is a lot to be said for smashing other players into the advertising hoardings.
Getting a shot on target can be quite tricky to start with but as soon as you've got the hang of it you'll be smashing the puck about like there's no tomorrow.
Once you do know what you're doing you'll want to start a proper league season. All options can be tailored to suit you but there doesn't seem to be a way of saving your settings.
The sound is good and there are some realistic touches like the clash of sticks but you'll need to set up the way you want the sound every time you play. It seems a small oversight, however, as on the whole the game is excellent.
NHL is a good alternative for those times you don't want to play Pro Evolution and would make a good addition to anyone's collection. It is also mid-priced and yet well above the standard of other games of a similar price.
Overall: 4/5
