Paul Stevens of 1, Hughes Avenue, Barnstaple, Devon. Tel: 01271 329311, writes: I HAVE recently found out the name of my grandfather and I am having trouble finding out anything about him.
During World War Two my nan was working in a church canteen helping to feed soldiers who had been injured in the war.
She met a man by the name of Mathew Robson Petty. Mathew was previously married to Hilda but they had separated.
My nan, Eileen, had a romance and became pregnant by Mathew. Her parents, who had adopted her, were furious and didn't want her to see him any more.
Mathew wanted to make a go of things together but my nan said no and they sadly parted.
He was posted off to the Shetland Islands, he was never told or knew that Eileen gave birth to a girl, Mary.
I would dearly like to know if he remarried as we may have family out there we do not know about.
I would like to find out more about his life and maybe trace a photo.
Here are all the details I have on him: Mathew Robson Petty (known as Bob); born August 13, 1914. He was in the RASC and his rank was believed to be Sergeant.
He was demobbed after the 1939-45 war. His civilian occupation was a carpenter.
His home address in 1942 was 109 London Road, Watford. He had a sister called Christine and a brother called Edward.
His wife he was separated from was called Hilda and I have found out recently that he passed away in October 1996, at the age of 82.
