CRIMINALS have carried out an "alarming" spree of burglaries in Watford in the past month, police revealed this week.
A series of burglaries have been carried out in the West Watford area since the beginning of the year, according to police who are urging householders to be vigilant.
Inspector David Dumbleton from the Watford Community Team said: "Since the beginning of the year West Watford has seen an alarming amount of burglaries. In half of the burglaries in the area the offenders have gained access through an insecure door or window."
Between January 1, 2005 and February 1, 2005 there have been 12 burglaries in the West Watford area. All occurred between Monday and Friday, with the majority of them taking place during the early evening and over-night.
During six of the burglaries the offenders gained access to the homes via open windows and unlocked doors. On four occasions the offenders gained entry by forcing front doors. The remaining two offences were distraction burglaries.
Mr Dumbleton said: "Our advice is simple - if you have got a lock on your door please use it. If you haven't got a lock then please get one fitted. You can go a long way in protecting your home."
The offences took place in Harwoods Road, Whippendell Road, Hagden Lane, Summer Place, Oxford Street, Cassio Road, High View, Kelmscott Crescent and King Georges Avenue.
In all the burglaries offenders have removed small items that are easy to carry, such as cash, jewellery and mobile phones.
