SHELTERED accommodation for the elderly will be built on a busy Watford road, despite major protests from residents, who say the development is too big for the site.
Plans submitted by developers McCarthy and Stone for 37 sheltered apartments for the elderly to be built at 702 to 708 St Albans Road were passed by the council on Tuesday.
Resident Sunil Ladwra, who had previously petitioned against earlier plans for the site, said he was disappointed with the result.
He said: "It was refused in September and they got them to make changes but in the end it's still not in keeping with the surrounding area. We are pretty appalled but what can you do?"
Last year the plans were refused on the grounds of highway safety and the scale and bulk of the building. The new application sought to overcome these reasons for refusal.
The application was accepted subject to conditions, including the installation of a refuse and recycling store.
