WATER pipes in Bushey will be given an upgrade following a decision by Three Valleys Water to pump £600,000 into their renewal.
Some of the existing mains were laid in the 1940's and are now weak, leaving them vulnerable to leaks and bursts.
Work has now started, which may cause some traffic problems, but the job is expected to be finished by the end of March.
Three Valleys managing director David Alexander said: "This water mains renewal scheme is part of a much larger investment programme of maintaining and renewing our underground pipe network to provide a reliable water supply to our customers. Without this investment, the mains would continue to deteriorate, causing bursts and leaks and disruption to service."
"We are working closely with Hertfordshire Highways to try to ensure that traffic disruption is kept to a minimum."
All residents affected by the work will be contacted by Three Valleys Water to keep them up to date on how work is progressing.
