ONE in ten drivers tested for alcohol in and around Watford this year gave a positive result, according to figures published this week.
A total of 1,918 drivers were asked to give breath tests during this year's police anti-drink drive campaign, of which 192 (ten per cent) tested positive.
This compared to last year's campaign when 640 tests were administered and 75 people tested positive (11.7 per cent).
Police chiefs said that while it was encouraging to see that the number of people caught drink driving had decreased, it was disheartening there were still people willing to take the risk.
Chief Inspector Peter Brooks said: "A huge amount of resources went into the recent campaign. Compared to last year the number of drivers stopped increased from 640 to nearly 2000 highlighting the Constabulary's commitment in tackling drink driving and improving road safety.
"It is disappointing that some drivers still act irresponsibly and put their own and other innocent road users' lives at risk. I am confident a large majority of the public support our efforts to make Hertfordshire a safer place and I thank those motorists who choose not to drink. This public support is reflected in the number of negative tests provided."
