Film buffs will soon be able to get a glimpse into the glamorous world of movie-making when rare photographs and memorabilia are released from the Hertfordshire film studio dubbed “Britain’s Hollywood”.

Elstree Studios is celebrating its 80th anniversay by lending the historic collection to the Hertfordshire archive to display throughout November.

Visitors will see for themselves the work which went into producing cinematic classics such as Indiana Jones, Superman, The Dam Busters and Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back.

It will also include items from recent blockbusters such as Troy, The Enigma and The Other Boleyn Girl.

Classic film lovers may be interested in the nostalgic exhibits preserved from the Welwyn Film Studios, which operated from 1928 to 1950 before production was moved to the current Elstree site.

The county council’s cabinet member for Education and Culture, Keith Emsall, sais he was delighted to hear of its opening.

He said: “Hertfordshire has been associated with film-making since the very earliest days of the industry, and we’re particularly fortunate that the film studios continue to produce major films here in the county after 80 years,” he said.

“The studios represent a hugely important aspect of our local heritage, so we are very grateful to Elstree Screen Heritage and Elstree props for providing the memorabilia for display - which I know will be a major draw for anyone interested in films and film making.”

Elstree Screen Heritage, who organised the event on the studio’s behalf, have released a celebratory souvenir DVD and booklet, ‘Made at Elstree,’ which will be available free of charge to visitors.
