A man has been arrested in connection with a fire at a converted townhouse in Bushey.

Firefighters from Watford were called to Chalk Hill at around 9.52pm on Friday evening, after being alerted to smoke coming from a building.

On arrival, the two crews found a fire in the basement flat that had caused smoke to spread to the rest of the building.

Soon afterwards, further fire engines from Bushey, Garston, Rickmansworth and Hemel Hempstead were mobilised to deal with the incident and joined police officer and paramedics outside the property, close to Bushey Arches.

Road blocks were enforced at the junction with Aldenham Road and Villiers Road while emergency services were at the scene, until around 11.07pm.

Nobody was injured but it was noted three people were involved.

Police today confirmed officers were called to the scene, after the incident was deemed suspicious.

A scene guard remained on duty over Friday night to protect any possible evidence, before Scenes of Crime Officers inspected the building yesterday (Saturday).

Police have since arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

He has been released on police bail and ordered to return to Watford police station on December 18.

The building, which has been converted into flats, is owned by Watford Community Housing Trust. Police have now handed control of the building back to the Trust, pending further forensic investigations.
