A glass was “smashed” into a man’s face on the dance floor of a Watford nightspot it has been alleged.
Albanian Naim Kameri is alleged to have “glassed” Richard Doran during a night out at Chicago Rock Café in Watford high street in April.
The 26-year-old builder was arrested shortly after the incident, spattered with blood with a gash to his hand running from between the thumb to the palm of the hand.
Kameri, who came to this country in 1999, told police he received the injury from glass on the floor after falling over, following an attack on him by two men.
On Tuesday the jury at St Albans Crown Court were read the interview conducted by investigating officer Gareth Jackson, after Kameri’s arrest.
Kameri admitted that on a scale of drunkenness of one to ten he was a nine, and could remember little of the incident. He said he was a regular at the pub and had never caused any trouble there.
Kameri, denies ABH, and told police he was being pushed into by two men on the dance floor - who had sworn at him and made obscene gestures - before he was punched and kicked on the ground.
He could not say whether he had defended himself.
Detective Jackson then put what he thought had occurred, to Kameri. “I think what has happened is that we have a guy that has had his face ripped up. I think you were there and were drunk and these two lads were there and drunk as well.
“There were some words exchanged between you. He may have sworn at you and the red mist came. You got angry and had a glass in your hand you were drinking from and smashed it in his face.”
He added: “We are concerned about this serious injury this chap’s got. We accept what you say about him being mouthy and coming over and banging into you, because maybe they were trying to pull a couple of girls. That’s what’s gone on, but we’re concerned about whether you glassed him in the face.”
Kameri, from Cricklewood, insisted he did not remember, saying, “I have been there four to five years and everyone knows me. I have never had a fight, or try to pull girls like everybody does, just have a drink with my friends and go back home again.”
The case continues.
