Metal detectors can find a wealth of information on the subject, during an event at Watford Central Library today.
The library will host an event as part of the national Family Learning Festival at which two antiquities experts will talk about their role and give their verdict on artefacts dug up by the public.
No valuations, however, will be given.
The guest speakers will be Julian Watters, Hertfordshire finds liaison officer and a portable antiquities expert, and Dave Rayment, a local metal detector enthusiast with a particular knowledge of coins.
The event, which begins at 7.30pm, will be hosted by Victoria Cook from Three Counties Radio.
Following the session, the library will hold its regular meeting of the RaW (Reading and Writing) Book Club, which members of the public are welcome to attend.
The club will discuss the book Danny Wallace and the Centre of the Universe, which links into the event as the central character goes shopping for antiques.
County Councillor Keith Emsall, Executive Member for Education and Culture, said: "It will be a fascinating opportunity for people to find out more about antiquities and to get an expert view about potential treasures lying around their home."
Admission to the event is free but people should visit Watford Central Library in advance to book their ticket.
