A contentious application by Tesco to build a convenience store and flats in Croxley Green has been withdrawn - just hours before councillors were due to discuss the issue.
The proposed development, next to the Shell Garage on Watford Road, was to be decided this evening (Thursday) at a meeting of Three Rivers District Council’s Development Control Committee.
Councillors, however, were expected to follow expert advice about the potential impact on smaller shops and refuse the plans.
It is the second time the application has been withdrawn at the eleventh hour. In November, a near identical proposal was also refused on the same day it was due to be heard.
An earlier application was rejected by the council in March 2007.
Despite the news, residents and traders, who mounted a prolonged and vociferous campaign against the plans, say they are not yet celebrating.
Campaigner Barry Grant said: “We know they will be back with another application. For the local residents it is very frustrating. But that is what Tesco and other big companies do. They will be relentless with this until they get their way.”
