COUNCILLORS could be forced to referee an increased number of disputes between neighbours, Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill has warned, following the Government’s relaxation of home development laws.
Since Wednesday, October 1, homeowners can extend their houses without asking for planning permission from their local authority.
Other projects, such as fitting solar panels or converting garages, are also easier to complete, following the changes to planning regulations.
But after initially believing it was a good idea, Mayor Thornhill told Watford Borough Council the ruling will lead to public confusion.
She said: “I think at best the public will be confused by this. I think it means we need a full briefing of implications because I expect our phones will be going even more.
“It was premature of me to say it was good news. But I do think members need to be properly briefed about what the new rule is.
“We could have even more neighbour disputes where we will be called on to be the referee in the case.”
