A former pupil of William Penn School in Rickmansworth emailed Nostalgia following a question about memories from former pupils.

Marilyn Andrews, née Horwood, from Croxley Green, said: “I was a pupil there from 1959 to 1963. I was in form 1X2 in the first year, then T1 in the following three years.

“I also remember going when it was a junior school before exchanging with Shepherds Lane – the then senior school. My teacher was a Miss Poole.

“The school consisted of one block. The main hall was where the library once stood. I have vivid memories of the teaching staff at William Penn. Mr Thompson was the headmaster and Mrs Denton the headmistress. The deputy was a Mr Swinton or Swinley.

“We also had teachers named Mr Hughes, Mr Dan (the metal work man as he was known), Miss Finnemore the cookery teacher, and Mr Fisher (history) to name a few. I enjoyed my few short years there.

“The school had many new blocks added over the years and my one really vivid memory was the new high block as my form was at the top.

“On my first day in the new block l climbed the four sets of stairs, on reaching the second from the top step l lost my nerve and felt quite giddy as l have no head for heights. Being able to see through the stairs did not help. Oh those were the days.”
