An eight-year-old from Watford who has cerebral palsy has defied the odds and learned how to swim.
Ella Child had a natural love for water from a young age, but her condition made it difficult to learn in a conventional setting as they did not factor in her individual needs.
Her parents were desperate to find a solution, knowing the benefits swimming for Ella such as reducing the strain on joints and muscles, which would allow her to build strength and feel less stiff.
Eventually they found one-to-one personal swimming lessons with Level Water, run by Watford Leisure Centre – Woodside, managed by Everyone Active on behalf of Watford Borough Council.
Ella's mother Liz said: "Since starting the swimming lessons, Ella has made incredible progress and is both confident and capable in the water.
"The programme offers a unique, inclusive experience that isn’t always easy to find.
"The fact that it’s tailored to meet the needs of every child - regardless of ability - creates a truly supportive environment where Ella feels valued and capable.
"There aren’t enough programmes like this that combine fun, inclusivity, and skill-building in such a balanced way."
The swimming lessons have proven to be a game-changer for Ella, providing numerous benefits which are directly helping her with physical and mobility challenges.
Liz added: "In recent weeks, we were thrilled to see Ella standing in the water unaided and taking steps with confidence.
"Every time Ella makes progress, she gains a greater sense of accomplishment and confidence.
"This sense of achievement can translate to a more positive outlook on her physical abilities in other areas of life, motivating her to keep trying new things."
The swimming lessons have also given Ella a sense of routine and achievement, alongside equipping her with water safety awareness and a lifelong love of the water.
Watford mayor Peter Taylor said: "It is so heart-warming to hear Ella's story. The right support can make a world of difference.
"Rose’s teaching expertise has boosted Ella’s confidence—not just in the water but also beyond the pool.
"A huge thank you to Everyone Active and Level Water for their outstanding collaboration in making these one-on-one sessions a reality."
