An eco-friendly cycling and walking route in Watford has won a national award.
The Green Loop project was named the winner in the 'Excellence in Digital Planning' category at the RTPI Awards for Excellence in Digital Planning Practice.
The award recognises the borough's innovative use of technology to shape the urban landscape.
Developed in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Digital Urban, the Green Loop's digital engagement efforts attracted more than 270 participants during an immersive VR bike ride experience last year.
The VR bike ride allowed residents to visualise the Green Loop's potential in an interactive way.
Watford mayor Peter Taylor said: "I am thrilled that our Green Loop has won an RTPI Excellence Award.
"This is a testament to Watford’s forward-thinking approach to urban planning and our dedication to engaging the community.
"The Green Loop represents our vision for a greener, healthier, and more connected town.
"A huge thank you to all the council officers, local cycle groups, and the wider community who have worked together to make this happen.
"The Green Loop was one of my key commitments in my 2022 re-election manifesto – I am proud that this improved green loop allows greater access for people to walk and cycle around our town."
The Green Loop is a continuous cycling and walking route spanning 6.5 miles which encircles Watford town centre.
Enhancements to the project will continue over the coming years, with the view of delivering long-term benefits to residents and visitors alike.
Councillor Ian Stotesbury, portfolio holder for sustainability and transport, said: "Watford is committed to building a sustainable and connected future, and the Green Loop is a shining example of this vision.
"By embracing innovation and engaging with our community, we’re making active travel and greener choices easier for everyone.
"This national recognition highlights the transformative potential of projects like the Green Loop in shaping a healthier, more sustainable town."
