This picture is around 120 years old and was taken a few years before the construction of a well-known bank building in the heart of Watford.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at this photo of Market Place from the start of the last century.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This photo, published as a postcard, was probably taken around 1904 or 1905 by Watford photographer Frederick Downer.
“He captures the busy street scene and Watford's weekly Saturday market from a top floor window of a building long since demolished.
“It shows Market Place with lots of stalls and was taken just a few years before a new bank was constructed (currently occupied by HSBC bank).
“The premises demolished to make way for the new building had originally been a drapers’ shop.”
